Kranz, forget the issues

David Kranz writes another campaign ad for Senator Tim Johnson that wants to remove the need for debates. Excerpt:

What Dykstra looks forward to most are debates against Johnson. That remains a sensitive issue because debating offers a chance for the challenger to make inroads. It's also sensitive because Johnson's speech remains affected by the brain hemorrhage.

But the risk factor is there for Dykstra, too. He might need to tiptoe through the debates, be cautious not to seem insensitive during exchanges between the candidates.

Kranz ends with this anti-Dykstra attack:

Beyond the debate issue, Dykstra seems to know what the challenges are but is convinced that he can win this race.

Yet odds still are against him as he seeks to to make victory possible. His fundraising is in question. This race is about seniority, about raising money and improving name identity, and so far, Johnson's campaign overpowers Dykstra in the money department. In the June 3 primary, Dykstra's vote percentage against two other unknown candidates could have been more resounding, but he does have time to bolster some of those shortcomings.

The biggest problem is that he is running against a popular incumbent, who despite health issues is regarded as the clear favorite.

It might take more than debating to overcome that.

Typical tone in today’s political arena…forget about issues, the game is about popularity, name ID, and more important than anything…money.

"could have been more resounding"? How much more resounding than a 2-to-1 victory over two other candidates combined does a guy need?
