SDEA violated campaign laws?

Chelsea Moe, a first-time voter, graduate of Baltic High School, and campaign worker for the committee supporting Initiated Measure 10, Friday faxed a letter to Attorney General Larry Long requesting that the Attorney General investigate a violation of South Dakota Campaign Finance Law by the South Dakota Education Association.

"Measure 10 opponents have done everything in their power to try and stifle openness and transparency in government, including repeatedly breaking the law," said Moe. "Campaign finance laws are meant to protect the people, and yet once again, here you have opponents of Measure 10 breaking the rules and ignoring the law."

According to Moe, SDEA union officials last month sent a letter to voters urging them to vote "no" on Measure 10. The campaign letter does not, however, bear the language indicating who paid for the letter as required by South Dakota Campaign Finance law.

"It’s like stopping at a stop sign when no one is around." said Moe. "You do it because it is the law, you do it because it’s the right thing to do. Even though it’s a simple thing, if you don’t stop, you’re breaking the law."

South Dakota law requires that any printed political communications contain the phrase "Paid for by (Name of candidate, political committee, or political party)".
