The Mitchell Daily Republic’s editorial for today urges its readers to attend these area events on July 4th:
It’s shaping up to be a short summer in South Dakota, considering our cold spring and a wet and chilly May and early June. And as anyone who lives in South Dakota knows, autumn is just around the corner. In just eight short weeks, it will be September. It’s all the more reason to get outdoors this weekend and enjoy the activities that Mitchell and the surrounding towns have to offer. A few examples:
• The Gateway to the West Fest will be held Friday at the Prehistoric Indian Village in Mitchell and will feature American Indian-themed music from 4 p.m. until dark. The feature group will be Brulé, a band that hopes to someday make Mitchell — and the amphitheater near the Indian Village — its home base. A fireworks display will conclude the festival.
Tickets can be purchased at the door.
• The Mitchell Jaycees will once again put on a fireworks display at Lake Mitchell on Saturday. The display will be paid for through donations, fundraising and a monetary gift from the city and will begin at dusk, or sometime around 10 p.m.
• The nearby town of Emery will be celebrating its quasquicentennial this weekend, beginning Friday and running through Sunday. Many towns already have had their 125th anniversary celebrations and several more will soon. These events are great, not only for current and past residents, but also for folks who simply are looking for a party.
There is nothing like a small-town anniversary celebration. Also, not much compares to the patriotic celebrations that small towns put together for the Fourth of July.
• At 10 a.m. Saturday, local resident Steve Sibson will read the Declaration of Independence at the Davison County Courthouse’s former bandstand. He also will discuss the origins of certain parts of the Declaration and hopes to give a better understanding to the work of our founding fathers. He promises the estimated hour-long program will provide a "patriotic morning" for attendees.
These are just a few of the events going on this weekend. There are other activities, too.
Our message is to get out of the house and take part, whether it’s commemorating America’s independence — the true reason for the holiday in the first place — or simply playing catch in the front yard while burgers grill nearby.
Enjoy the weekend.
