Since school let out, more than 15,200 free meals have been served to children in Sioux Falls, and the demand is rising.
The meals are designed to be a safety net for families needing help with nutrition, school officials have said. A greater need for the service has been seen at sites statewide this summer, said Sandra Kangas, state Department of Education child and adult nutrition services director.

Meals are offered at seven sites in Sioux Falls where children, regardless of income, can eat on a come-and-go basis. Meals are funded by the federal Summer Feeding Program and meet specific dietary requirements.
So thanks to the federal government, parents now have more money to spend on themselves. Perhaps that means an extra six-pack or two for some.
