On the front-page of today’s Argus Leader is a Mike Madden negative report attacking the Club for Growth’s first amendment right to express the political beliefs of its member that include many South Dakotans:
If you're still sick of political ads after the 2002 election, you may want to keep your television turned off for the next seven months. The Club for Growth, a Washington-based conservative group, has launched the first negative ad in the Senate race between Minority Leader Tom Daschle and Republican John Thune. Meanwhile, both candidates are amassing campaign treasuries that could fund millions of dollars of commercials between now and November.
Would the Argus Leader also attack Emily’s List and the Brady Campaign for running ads pointing out John Thune’s opposition to abortions and regulating gun shows? The media should honor the first amendment and not promote the stifling of that right.
Perhaps the Argus Leader expect South Dakota to turn off their TVs for the next seven months, so that they would have the monopoly on what South Dakota hears on political issues. I am sure David Kranz and Tom Daschle would relish that.
