From a John Thune campaign press release:
THUNE SUPPORTERS SWAMP TEPID DASCHLE PROTEST, CALL FOR DASCHLE TO SUPPORT AMENDMENT PROTECTING AMERICAN FLAG
SIOUX FALLS - Rallying support for a constitutional amendment to protect the American Flag from desecration, more than 70 supporters of John Thune overwhelmed a small group of protesters attempting to defend Tom Daschle.
"Tom Daschle's protesters pathetically tried to defend the indefensible," said Thune campaign manager Dick Wadhams. "Daschle's comments undermining national unity on the eve of war along with his opposition to constitutionally protecting the American Flag are indefensible."
A small group from the Daschle campaign attempted to protest outside the Thune for Senate headquarters today. When the Daschle protesters arrived, more than 70 Thune supporters poured out of the headquarters calling on Daschle to support a constitutional amendment to protect the American Flag from desecration.
Daschle told the Associated Press this week he opposes the amendment and disparaged attempts to protect the American Flag as a "political ploy"and "politically divisive."
Thune strongly supports the amendment.
"How ironic Daschle would cite divisiveness when he undermined our national unity as the only senator to attack the president on the eve of war in Iraq." Wadhams said. "Daschle is terrified of this impending vote
on protecting our flag because he knows the vast majority of South Dakotans join John Thune in strongly supporting the amendment."
The Senate will be voting soon on the proposed constitutional amendment to protect the American Flag from desecration.
UPDATE: SDP has posted pictures of the Thune rally.
