At the very top of today’s Argus Leader front-page is a biased hit piece on Dan Nelson and the Republican Party. The report offered nothing new. It could have added some balance by bringing into the report some of what Kevin Woster reported during the week in the Rapid City Journal.
The Argus Leader talked about the negative political ramifications to the Republicans, but never brought into play the alleged political motivation of Tom Miller, the high profile staunch Democrat who brought the lawsuit that "fatally wounded’ Dan Nelson Automotive. No where in the report did you find the following points:
1). Todd Epp reported that a former Dan Nelson Automotive employee felt that Tom Miller’s lawsuit was politically motivated.
2). Columbia University’s Director of AG program acknowledged on the day the Iowa Attorney General made his indictment that, "the defendant is especially close to new SD Sen. John Thune".
3). Attorney Mark Weinhardt who was surprised by the lawsuit and stated, "We asked for a proposal to settle this matter and instead of a proposal, we got a lawsuit".
4). Judge Irvin N. Hoyt ruled that Dan Nelson Automotive had been "fatally wounded" by a consumer fraud lawsuit in Iowa.
5). Larry Long, South Dakota's AG, concluded that the Iowa AG's allegations lack merit. [The Argus piece did touch on this a little.]
6). The ties Tom Miller had to Steve Hildebrand during the Gore 2000 Iowa caucus. The speech Tom Miller gave at the 2002 Democrat National Convention and his role as parliamentarian at the 2004 Democrat National Convention.
7). Is Tom Miller smart enough to know that going after one of Thune's supporters is a good thing for the Democrats, despite damaging Dan Nelson's employees and customers?
