Today’s column by Dave Kranz again covers the controversy surrounding the appointment of Steven Mullins of Oklahoma to the position of U.S. attorney in South Dakota. His column also covers who is friends among Republicans. Again, he fails to point out the facts I pointed out earlier regarding the friendship of Tom Daschle and Judge Larry Piersol who started the entire controversy over the U.S. attorney position.
Rush Limbaugh provides us with this quote from Tom Daschle:
Here is more information on the judge, including this comment from Daschle at the American Trial Lawyers Association convention. First, this is Daschle, talking about the judge that heard his own case. "First, I got my start in politics thanks to lawyers... rather, one lawyer in particular. In 1978, I won my first election to the House by 14 votes. Don’t laugh, in South Dakota, that’s 60 percent of the vote. Apparently undaunted by that landslide of support, my opponent sued to contest the election. I was fortunate to be represented by a great lawyer and a dear friend, Larry Piersol. It took one year and 21 days, but here I am 25 years later."
Limbaugh adds this:
This is the Daschle machine, if we can call it that in South Dakota, getting geared up in what is basically an attempt to steal the election there, because he was going to lose this, and he still probably will. This is said to be backfiring big time on Daschle. That he has had to go to this length to make a mockery of the election by filing this lawsuit. Everybody knows the judge is one of his cronies. The judge should have recused himself in this case.
I guess Kranz is too much of a friend to inform his readers on the Daschle/Piersol friendship and how South Dakota's image was sacrificed by a Daschle supporter still seeking revenge against the guy who defeated his friend. And the people of South Dakota should understand that we are not immune from judicial activism.
UPDATE: Here is the entire speech Daschle gave to the American Trial Lawyers Association convention on July 20, 2003.
