Abortions were 707 too high in 2007:
The latest Health Department report on it shows the number of induced abortions in South Dakota fell to 707 in 2007.
That's the second-lowest reported since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that made it legal.
The media relations director for Planned Parenthood says the drop is no surprise because of better access to reproductive health and birth control.
But the director of the Alpha Center pregnancy counseling center credits the lower numbers to abstinence education and some of the laws that have passed.
One of those took effect in July and requires doctors to tell women seeking abortions the procedure ends a human life.
The release of the latest numbers comes a month after South Dakotans for the second time rejected a near-ban on the procedure.
What we do know for sure is that abortions are down and Planned Parenthood’s business is down resulting in layoffs. Imagine how many Planned Parenthood employees would lose their jobs when abortion is finally banned.
