Pat Powers has again decided to personally attack me and insists that the driving issue behind the Newtown shootings is "mental illness":
The debate is not about guns, video games, knives, pointy sticks, or in Steve’s case, ancient crossbows.
It’s about mental illness, and recognizing and treating those who are a danger to society.
The shooter's "personality disorder" was Asperger's, which is not linked to violence:
Dr. Hilleary Rockwell is a Pediatrician in Jacksonville and says signs of any disorder on the autism spectrum can be detected as early as one or one and half years old, but violent behavior is not a link to the syndrome.
"People with Asperger's generally are not violent, they're not a problem, a dangerous person to interact with they may just not respond socially in a way that you would think would be standard," says Dr. Rockwell.
Still, after some Newtown shooting reports said the shooter may have had mental health issues, such as Asperger's or autism, some in the community were alarmed.
"People with Asperger's aren't going to be doing this kind of thing, this is not something that's expected to see someone with Asperger's doing and I think if you look at most people in the country over the decade that we've had mass shootings they don't have Asperger syndrome," says Dr. Rockwell.
And not everybody who owns an AR-15 (over 3 million of the brand used by the shooter have been sold) go into a elementary school and kill children. And not everybody who plays violent video games go a a suicidal murder rampage. The discussion needs to turn to "influences" and how can we reduce those influences. We also have to understand that this happened in a school where guns are banned. Escalating gun bans is illogical. When we have a culture that trained to view the Bible in a negative way and instead promotes violence as the solution in media and video games, then the need to protect ourselves is much greater. The constitution provides us with the right to defend ourselves. We are not going to solve this problem. The solution will be the return of Jesus Christ. But until then we can reduce shootings by reversing the cultural trends that attack the Bible, entertainment's rewarding violence, and the Cultural Marxist's attack on males, whites, and patriarchal Christianity. In America, we are given the natural right to defend ourselves from evil actions. That right has been taken away from teachers. If we truly want to make our schools safer, then we need to restore the constitutional and natural right to carry firearms for law abiding teachers and staff.
